Potsdam

by nighthawk - last update: Apr 24, 2003

Potsdam has been the residence of Brandenburg princes and of Prusian kings since 1660. The Grosse Kurfurst built a castle here in 1662 and king Friedrich Wilhelm I made Potsdam grow to a garrison-town (first part 18th century). Friedrich II had the palace SansSouci built as well as the New Palace.
Even though Postdam still is a very beautifull city, one can easily see that much has been destroyed during WW II. Also the DDR-administration had too little money to maintain and restore the buildings.
Even the many palaces and parcs have fallen into decay.
When you are going to visit Potsdam, make sure you have enought time to visit all the sights of the town.

Some sights are: The Dutch quarter, The Russian quarter, Rathaus, Nikolaikirche, Marstall, Schloss Sanssouci, the Potsdammer Brandenburger Tor and the New Palace.

Picture taken from : www.potsdam.de/index.php3 Potsdam Information Site.
