The name of Grevenmacher is composed of two words: "Greven" and "Macher". "Macher" pulls his origin of the Latin word "maceria" (old walls), while "Greven" comes from German word "Grafen", that wants to say count. The city "Macher" count distinguishes himself since 1346 of the others "Machern", that existed in the region: Königsmacher, Kleinmacher, Rodemacher, Mecher, Mézières etc. The name of Grevenmacher in his current form exists since 1769.
