Peschiera is centrally located and it is known that people settled here since prehistoric times. It is one of the most important places at the lake.
Plinio the old tells in his Naturalis Historia that during Roman reign Peschiera was named Arilica and that fish was traded for agricultural products.
During the emigration of various nations the name changed from Ardelica to Pischeriae, thenPiscaria and finally it became Peschiera.
Peschiera used to be a fortress and was reigned by various landlords like Charles the great. Charles gave Peschiera the coast of San Martino di Tours and Berengario who fortified and enlarged the fortress.
In the 12th century Federico I Barbarossa came to rule over Peschiera.
Different dynasties ruled over Peschiera like de Scaligeri, the Scala who most likely had Dante Alighieri as a guest.
From 1387 the Visconti's ruled and in 1440 the republic of Venice.
After the Vienna congres in 1815 the government of Peschiera was under Austrian rule and was part of the so called “Quadrilatero” with Mantua, Verona and Legnago.
Up to 1861, when an end came to the Italian independance war numerous battles were fought over Peschiera but in 1866 the whole of the Venetian region came part of the Italian kingdom. |
