Uruguay is a country of 3.2 million people who live in an area of only 70,500 sq. miles. The capital, Montevideo, is located at the mouth of the Rio Plata, where it opens into the southern Atlantic Ocean. The city is full of parks and beaches, and has several attractive plazas such as Plaza Independencia. Montevideo is the southernmost capital city in the Western Hemisphere.
Like most of my trips to Latin America, my December 1999 visit to Uruguay was for business, and was much too short. I did, however, have a weekend free in Montevideo, and used my free time to take a city tour. I also found time to do a good deal of birding along the fringes of a golf course in Pocitos, and the shoreline, which was only a few blocks from my hotel.
