I visited Lima for only 48 hours on business. I had just enough time to see the swanky Miraflores district, the downtown historical area, and to go birding along the coast south of Lima (see my travelog for details on the birding trip).

After having spent two weeks in Quito, Ecuador, Lima struck me as a rather congested, dusty, urban environment. The city is basically built in a desert, so the surrounding hills are brown, and there is a lot of trash along the highways.

On the other hand, downtown Lima is full of history and contains numerous colonial-style buildings, churches, and plazas, which stand in sharp contrast to the neon billboards and urban bustle of the newer parts of the city.

One interesting bit of trivia I picked up while in Lima: Peru is the only country in the world where a locally-produced soft drink (Inca Cola) outsells both Coke and Pepsi. Naturally, I couldn't resist trying an Inca Cola, and found it to be quite good, if not a little too sweet.

My trip was way too short to get a real feel for Lima, much less Peru in general. Next time I hope to get to Cuzco, Macchu Picchu, Manu, and Iquitos.

You saw quite a bit during these 48 hours - considering, that there was a little business to be done as well! Nice page!

Mango's is good value for money. The owner. Mr. Modenesi, is also the owner of the highly reputed 'Costa Verde' restaurant.
