This is where I live now guys

Welcome to PEYRIEU, raging metropolis of around 800 souls (and probably that many bodies too!).

Peyrieu is just south of Belley and is mostly a farming and wine growing community - although these days in France both those things are in radical decline. It also has a lot of weekend homes for people from Lyon or Geneva.

Peyrieu is in the very southern tip of the BUGEY chain of mountains that run west of the Rhone river and look onto the Alps to the east. From my bedroom I can see into the Savoy region and look towards Mont Blanc, although I can't see it as there are other mountains in the way.

The national hiking trail (GR) for the Bugey is accesible just outside the village. it takes about 2 hours to hike to Izieu.

Peyrieu runs to a village store, which is only open in the morning, a bar, hotel and a restaurent. PEYRIEULANS (as we are known) are well known for their capacity for alcohol consumption and we have a MEGA party here every july when we bake pizzas in the communal bread ovens and dance all night.

Peyrieu also has a "Chateau" which until recently was owned by an organisation for the reinsertion of handicapped people. It was once the property of the HOFF family who were exceedily rich. Mr HOFF was from Alsace and had public buildings bult in the style of his home - so you drive through this little typical 'bugiste' village and find a townhall and post office that have been dragged straight out of the Alsace area.

We also reputedly have the oldest war memorial in France....

Lots of water

One of the advantages of living in or near the mountains is the vast amount of water that is available. In Peyreu our tap water comes from the mountain, and heer you can see the over flow that runs down into the river.

Yet more water

And fountains all over the place... people use these to get free water for their gardens or to wash their cars....

Pros and Cons
  • Pros:It's quiet and there's really good walking in the area
  • Cons:It's a bit off the main drag
  • In a nutshell:My private corner of paradise
