I've been three times to Niagara Falls until now, once in the summer, once in November and my most recent visit was during Christmas time. That was by far my most favourite trip. I can't say that Niagara Falls is my ultimate travel destination, because it is so touristy. But this trip was so romantic that I actually enjoyed being here. So that is what this page will mainly be about, Christmas time at Niagara :-))
This picture was taken in December and you can see the ice surrounding the falls, which make it look beautiful.

The reason to go to Niagara Falls is of course the falls themselves. They are very impressive, so no wonder that so many people love to go there.
There are actually two waterfalls and they are both huge. But the one I love best is the Horsehoe Falls which you can see on the photo. The other one is called the American Falls, located a bit further down the road, and I'll show you some photos of that one later on this page.
The shape of the Horshoe Falls is like a horseshoe, hahaha, so it is easy to guess how these Falls got its name.

The one thing I remember best from the falls is the sound. From a long distance away you can hear the roaring thunder of the falls. At first I wondered what it was, but when I got close I knew it.... it's THE FALLS! Getting up close to the falls the sound is enormous! I think that gives a clue about the power of these falls.

This is the second of the falls at Niagara Falls. It's on the other side of the river when you are visiting Niagara on the Canadian side (what I've always done). These falls are located on the American side of the border, hence their name 'American Falls'. Although these falls are amazing as well, the Horseshoe Falls are by far my favourite.
There is actually a third fall, called the Bridal Veil Falls, but it looks more like it is part of the American Falls. If you look closely at the picture, you can see that on the right side is actually a separate small fall. This one is called the Bridal Veil Falls.

It's not always that great weather at the Niagara Falls. During my visit in the summer of 97 it was a wonderful summer's day! The big disadvantage of that is that it will be overcrowded with people. Unfortunately I hardly have any photos of that visit, so you have to do with the photos that I took in November and December 2002. Hahaha, that means cold and wet, but hardly any other people around.
This photo was taken in November, I was soaking wet from the fine drizzle of rain, hahaha, but still smiling as it is always great to see the falls :-)) In the background you can see the Horseshoe Falls.

This tip looks like it will be about the weather, hahaha, but it will not! These two guys have just been 'Behind the Falls' and you get those rain jackets when you go here. During a rainy November day these rain jackets do come in handy while walking around at Niagara as well though ;-))
I've always wanted to go 'behind the falls' but never got a real good opportunity to do so. During summertime the line-up to go there was amazing; I think we had to wait about an hour. Too much for me! So I skipped that part and just looked at the falls from the normal viewpoints.
November and December didn't seem THE month to visit it either. I have to admit standing in the freezing cold mist of the falls during the winter months never appealed to me, brrrr cold! So I wisely decided to skip it again.
If you ever decide to go behind the Falls, do prepared of becoming soaking wet, and most likely get freezing cold during the winter.

Things To Do: Niagara Falls in the winter

Visiting the Niagara Falls in the winter has its own beautiful advantages. It's not overcrowded with people and you can have some unusual but beautiful views.
The spray of the falls is enormous and the area around the falls is covered by the water drops. Yes sure, hahaha, it is wet and brrrrr cold when you get some of this spray on you. But the beautiful thing is that it freezes everywhere, on trees or like in this case the railing at the falls. It just gives everything something special, white trees, icy railing, it just looks very romantic. I guess Niagara Falls during Christmas time is not such a bad idea :-)
Through the railing you can see a glimpse of the Horseshoe Falls.

On a cold cold winter day like this you probably get desperate in looking for a warm place to sit down and be entertained. That was our idea, so we went to the Imax theatre to warm up and watch the big screen movie about the Niagara Falls. Sounds good, doesn't it? Well, it isn't that spectacular to be thruthful, just 'okay'. So I don't think I would repeat this visit for a second time. We did get warm though, hahaha, so part of the visit was a great success :-)

The movie we watched was the Falls Movie "Niagara: Miracles, Myths and Magic". The movie takes about 45 minutes and tells about the history of the Niagara Falls, all the way back to 12.000 years ago. It is nice in a way, you get some nice views over the falls. But like I said in the previous tip, it was not really my kind of thing.
They show several other movies as well, but the Falls Movie seems to be the most popular one and is showed very often. The entrance to the Imax Theatre will cost you $12.00 (CAD) for ages 13 - 64 (in 2004). You can read more about the entrance fee on their website : http://www.imaxniagara.com/main.asp
Here is an impression of a scene out of the movie. I took this photo while watching the movie, hahaha, that might give you some idea of how captured I was by it :-))

This is another picture taken at the Imax theatre. You can clearly see the huge amount of water that thunders down at the Horseshoe Falls. The Niagara Falls is the second largest falls on the globe next to Victoria Falls in Africa, a waterfall that is on my wish list to see one time in my life.

davesut Wed Jun 13, 2007 21:01 UTC Great pics - we were there last Easter which was colder than Christmas so they told us but a little less snow. Great pics as ever. Are you sure you are supposed to take photos inside the IMAX?!? | Trekki Wed May 17, 2006 18:14 UTC Ah, the falls look terrific in winter with all that snow and iced leaves around :-)) Hihi, yes the colored falls, well well I thought the same :-) Oh, and polar paws would be something, sweet Nalle might use now, ok, I go knitting him some :-))) | HotRodEtte Sun Nov 13, 2005 23:36 UTC This cracks me up...the Frankenstein w/ the Whopper at BK. Every time I see it I laugh--I have a photo of it too, was there in October! :) ~Cindy | globerover Thu Nov 3, 2005 17:10 UTC I wouldn't call someone a daredevil who jumps down the Niagara, as there is a fair chance to survive, a daredevil is someone who flies Aeroflot, eats chicken meat in China and drinks self-distilled brandy "India style", preferably all at the same time :-) |
