In these cultural tips I want to show you some more of the interior of the St. Georg's Church with the 'Daniel' Tower. In this picture you can see two doors inside the church, and one of it has the date 1609 on it.
Here is some info/history of this church:
St. Georg's Church is a late gothic hall church with a 90 m high tower over the west entrance, called the 'Daniel' in the vernecular. On 7th October, 1427 it was decided to rebuild a house of worship. In 1451 the chancel was finished and the nave started. In 1454 the foundation for the tower was laid. The nave and the chancel were vaulted on 22 slim columns, 24 windows with tracery lighten up the church. After completion of the high altar by Friedrich Herlin in 1462 and the completion of the tower in 1490, the building was finished in 1505 when the magnificent vaulting was addded. During the Reformation the church became protestant in 1523/1525. The first restoration took place between 1877 - 1887. On 30th March 1945, at 9.21 p.m. a bomb destroyed the Steinmeyer organ which had been erected in 1889. On 2nd February 1974 a fire destroyed the baroque organ, built in 1610. 1971 - 1977 the last restoration took place; the restoration was completed by the inauguration of the new main organ in the west gallery.

One thing I enjoyed a lot in this church are the many woodcarvings. This is the side of a bench. It is wonderful to see these woodcarvings everywhere you look. So many details to look at, I have been wandering around here quite a long time, enjoying them.

On one of the wall you can find all these shields. It's not something you normally expect in a church, seeing so many of them together.

The organ of the St.Georg's Church is beautiful! I always love to listen to the organ, such impressive sound. But the organ wasn't playing while I visited the church, so I guess I will always have to wonder about this one ;-)

Although I could not feel the cold, I think your pics did a good job in capturing the temperature. | tiabunna Tue Nov 18, 2008 10:22 UTC Imagine finding such a picture-postcard town which hasn't been already taken over by hordes of tourists!
