Brrr, it was a cold day in March, I even had some snow on my way over here. I never heard of this little town of Nördlingen before. Hmmm, yes, maybe I should be ashamed, but I have to admit that I don't know that much about Southern Germany. Normally I only drive through it as quickly as I can to get to Italy. But this time I wanted to see a bit more of it.
I had little time, and energy, to prepare for my short vacation. I had two destinations I wanted to go : castle Neuschwanstein in Fussen, and also go to the VT-meeting in Innsbruck. But I had no clue where I should go next. So I emailed the question to my friends here at VT, asking about things to see and do in Southern Germany. And I really got some great tips!! Thanks everyone!!!
But besides the tips, I also got an invitation from my VT-friends Petra and Christian (Petra1) to stop by, and have a look in their beautiful little town. And that of course was an offer I didn't want to refuse!!!
And what a great visit it turned out to be. I had a great time meeting Petra and Christian, and was pleasantly surprised by this lovely little town of Nördlingen.
Nördlingen is located in the heart of the Ries district, the former Free Imperial Town of Nördlingen still has an almost complete medieval townscape. It is the only town in Germany with walls and battlements that can be walked all the way round.
Not only is Nördlingen a beautiful little town, it also lies in a very interesting area. 15 million years ago, the Ries (About 25 km in diameter) was formed by the impact of a large meteorite that hit the earth at aspeed of at least 70.000 km/h. Today this crater is one of the best preserved uns researched meteorite craters in the world.
Because of its similarity to many moon craters, American Apollo 14 astronauts organized a field training from 10th August to 14th August 1970 in the Ries. Aresult of this scientific corporation the Ries Crater Museum received a piece of the moon rocks from the Apollo 16 mission on permanent loan from NASA.

The Nordlingen tower provided you with a great view of the city. Although I could not feel the cold, I think your pics did a good job in capturing the temperature.
Imagine finding such a picture-postcard town which hasn't been already taken over by hordes of tourists! This is a very enjoyable page on what looks a very pleasant little stopover.
Nordlingen certainly is a lovely and scenic town. Love the architecture there. Also thanks for visiting my Granada pages. It is a wonderful place to visit.
Nördlingen looks a nice town! I should go again to Bayern, I still have much to see there!
Great page! I would love to visit here after reading your tips.
Wow! What a lovely and not crowded little walled town! Plus breathtaking view from the bell tower and great looking organ in St. George's church. Thanks for sharing!
Another gem just close to me, and I don't know of it. Thanks for your page, Simone - I'll need to discover a bit more of my surroundings hihi :-))
Intersting. I too had never heard of the place.
Quite an amazing little spot Simone! I love old walled cities and towns so was very happy to see your great pictures of Nordlingen. The view from the Bell Tower really is awesome, and good exercise too!
