There are a lot of things you must see in Amsterdam, because there is a lot to see and do here. But for me there is one true "must see" or rather "must experience" and that is a visit to the House of Anne Frank. So in these "must see activities" I will give you an impression of my visit to the House of Anne Frank.
This is the statue of Anne Frank close to the Anne Frank house. last year, September 2001, it was the first time I went to the Anne Frank house. An overwhelming experience.

But before I continue my story, I want to tell you something about Anne Frank first. Here is her lifestory in short, from the Anne Frank website :
http://www.annefrank.nl/eng/default2.html
-------------------------------- ----------------------------- - July 15,1944 -
"It is utterly impossible for me to build my life on a foundation of chaos, suffering and death. I see the world being slowly tranformed into a wilderness, I hear the approaching thunder that, one day, will destroy us too, I feel the suffering of millions. And yet, when I look up at the sky, I somehow feel that everything will change for the better, that this cruelty too shall end, that peace and tranquility will return once more"
[fragment of Anne Frank's Diary] ---------------------------------------------------------------------
Anne Frank was born in 1929 in Frankfurt am Main in Germany. In 1933, the anti-Jewish National Socialist Party led by Hitler comes to power. Anne Frank's Jewish parents Edith and Otto Frank perceive that there is no future in Germany for themselves and their children. They flee to the Netherlands in 1933. Anne is then four years old. Until she is eleven she grows up without a care in a relatively safer Holland. In 1940, the Netherlands is occupied by Germany and the protection that Holland provides comes to an end.
Anne's life is increasingly restricted by the anti-Jewish Decrees. In 1942 the deportations to the 'work camps' begin. Anne's parents see the possibility of going into hiding in the annex of the building that houses Otto's business. Anne writes her diary during the two years in hiding in the Secret Annex.

On August 4, 1944 the Secret Annex is raided by the Grüne Polizei (Security Police). Anne Frank and the seven others in hiding are arrested. What follows are long journeys to concentration camps in Holland, Poland, and Germany. Of all those in hiding only Otto Frank survives the camps.
The eight residents of the Secret Annex are transported to Auschwitz on the last train leaving the transit camp Westerbork. After a month at Auschwitz, Anne Frank and her sister Margot are transported to Bergen-Belsen Concentration Camp, where thousands of people are dying of hunger and sickness everyday. Margot and Anne both contract typhus and die within a short time of each other in March 1945, only a few weeks before the liberation.

-------------------------------- ------------------------------------- From "When the Clock Strikes Half Past Eight"
"Margot and mother are nervous. Shh...Father. Be quiet Otto. Shh...Pim!! It's eight-thirty. Come here, you can't run the water anymore. Walk softly!" A sample of what's said to father in the bathroom. At the stroke of half past eight, he has to be in the living room. No running water, no flushing toilet, no walking around, no noise whatsoever." ---------------------------------------------------------------------
The diary of Anne Frank.... I have read it so often. As a child I read it for the first time, and I have read it so many times since. A story that moves me every time. Even now, while I write this page, tears get into my eyes. I am reading parts of her diary again, see the pictures of her life, and I have a hard time to stop the dripping of my tears.
I never had the book myself, I always got it from the library. But after my visit to the Anne Frank house I bought a book. I haven't read it yet, I don't know why, but just the thought of having this diary feels special to me.

The house of Anne Frank, I didn't know what to expect from my visit here, but it was wonderful and emotional. I do reccommend to read the book before going here, because than the visit to the the house gets so much more meaning.

Although it was crowded, which took away a bit of the atmosphere, it is absolutely worth while going here. You can walk through the house and get a feel of how Anne lived. It is strange to walk here, and also confronting. It does force you to think back to those horrible days, and realize what Anne Frank, and many more like here, must have gone through.

I am not sure if I was allowed to take this picture, I hope I was. It is a picture bookcase, the doorway to the hidden part of the house. Seeing this bookcase brought shivers down my spine. The story of Anne Frank comes so much alive while walking through the house.
All the black and white pictures on this page, the facts, and quotes from the diary are from the Anne Frank website. This really is a great website, and you should take a look at it. You can find much more information about Anne Frank, her life and the House on this website :
