In 1998 I went for a roundtrip in the western part of the USA. Part of this trip went through California. If you are interested in the whole roundtrip, you should take a look on my USA page.
It's difficult to say what the highlights of this trip to California were, because it was al so beautiful and diverse : from the beautiful city of San Francisco, along the Coastline (Highway 1) to Hearst Castle. From the amazing nature in Sequoia NP, Yosemite NP and Death Valley you can go back in time in the ghosttown Bodie.
Abrubt changes in weather, from the sunny beaches to the cold nights in Yosemite, driving through the snow in the Sierra Nevada to end up in the heat in Death Valley. As you can see, it is hard to choose. So my advice is : go see it all!
