  • I have been to Italy four times and it has stolen my heart. When I think of Italy I think of the sun, the magnificent sunsets, the beautiful hills, the small towns that haven't changed since the middle ages, the friendly people and the fantastic food!

The first time I went to Tuscany, Umbria and of course the beautiful town of Rome. The second time I went further south, and visited the area around Napoli, but also went to the eastcoast, through central Italy and couldn't resist to spend several more days in beautiful Tuscany. The third had as excuse the VT-meeting in Bergamo. Hahaha, I love those kind of excuses to do some travelling. I had great fun in Bergamo at the meeting, and met some great friends. I loved the old city of Bergamo, and extended my trip with a visit to Venice and Trieste. My most recent trip has been to Trieste and a visit to the beautiful Cinque Terre.

Where ever you go in Italy, I am sure you will have a great time, because it is a fantastic country to visit.

In the picture you can see a sunflower, a photo I took in Tuscany. I love sunflowers! The Italian name for sunflower is girasole, isn't it a beautiful name! Thanks Boris for the translation :-)))

  • Bergamo... what a wonderful surprise! To me Bergamo was a surprise in two ways. First of all there was the surprise meeting for Titti, which was a great succes. But not only this was a 'surprise'. I was so surprised by the beauty of Bergamo. The old town is wonderful! I am so glad that the meeting was here, so I had the chance to discover this wonderful city. I went here not knowing what to expect, but got back having some new and wonderful friends and some beautiful memories.

  • Two days ago, I was saying goodbye to Cristiano, after the VT meeting in Bergamo.... but not for long! Although I didn't know at that time, I saw him again two days later already!!! We had so much fun together, that I decided to go to Trieste for the last day of our trip and meet Christiano for a second time. He made me so welcome here, and showed me his beautiful hometown. Thanks Cris! :-))

  • Venice... I have heard so many different opinions on this city, some love it, and some don't. And I have to admit that I have always been sceptical about this city.... I felt it was like a tourist trap, and that I wouldn't like it at all.... hmmm, but not anymore! I surrender..... Venice is magical!

I've visited Italy twice, making a roundtrip in both cases, but never did go to Venice itself. Yes, it appealed to me somehow to go here, but on the other hand.... it just wasn't 'it'... hahaha, well, that was what I thought! But in November 2001 I got another chance to visit Italy, because I was going to the VT-meeting in Bergamo. But going to Italy for just one weekend didn't seem right. Hahaha, so I extended into a full week, including Venice in my trip. And I don't regret that for one minute!

  • Burano is part of Venice, and it is my favourite place in Venice!

Burano is a little island in the Venice archipelago. It is a lazy fishing village. And when you go there on a sunny day as I did.... wow, you won't believe your eyes! The colours of the houses in this village are just amazing! I loved it here! I have taken so many photos of Burano, hahaha, impossible to show them all. But I did a very good try... and you can see them on my Burano page. So put on your sunglasses, and enjoy this colourful page!

  • Well, who doesn't recognize this picture: the leaning tower of Pisa! The tower is very famous and I had seen it a million times on pictures already. But to actually stand there and look at it was a weird experience. It was so familiar but so magnificent at the same time to finally see this famous tower with my own eyes.

But there is more to see in Pisa then only the leaning tower. The leaning tower is located on the 'Campo dei Miracoli' where you can also see the "Duomo", "Battistero"

  • From some main destinations in Italy to a totally unknown one. But one that reflects the atmoshpere of Italy. Just a bridge somewhere in the mountains... and a legend....

In the picture you can see me waving in the distance from the bridge. The bridge, the "Ponte della Maddalana", is in Borgo a Mozzano. I visited these places on my first vacation to Italy, as a daytrip from Pisa. You can read the legend about the bridge on my Borgo a Mozzano page :

  • Whatever you do, don't forget to go to the Piano Grande! It is maybe not so well known, but it so breathtaking beautiful. The Piano Grande is a plateau, shaped like an amphitheater, whith the Sibillini mountains as a magnificent decor. The highest point is that of the Monte Vettore (2475m).

The Piano Grande is located on the border of Umbria and Marche close to the town of Norcia. The way to the Piano Grande from Norcia is also spectaculair. The road climbs from 500 to a height of 1500 meters still being able to see Norcia and the surrounding landscape. It is beautiful sight seeing everything getting smaller, with every mile you drive. It is like looking at a minature world in the end. But when you go over the top, on the other side you see the Piano Grande..... WOW, I sight I will never forget.

  • The isle of Capri is not far out of the coast close to Napoli. It was August when I visisted Capri and probably because of that, it was very crowded with tourists. I didn't like the towns on Capri because it was far too busy. But the coastline is magnificent and made the trip really worth while! Try to go all the way round the island on a small boat, you will be amazed by the views.

    Things To Do: Pompeii, Italy

  • Pompeii was destroyed by an eruption of the Vesuvius in 79 AD. About 3 meters of material fell on Pompeii, burying everything except the roofs of some buildings. The city was abandoned after that and everyone forgot about its location.

I visited Pompeii in the middle of the day in August and this means awefully hot weather. I think it was about 35 degrees celcius in the shade that day. Call me crazy, but it was the best time of the day to visit it for me. All the other tourists were still in their air conditioned hotel rooms or cooling of in the pool. I had Pompeii almost to myself!

When I entered this historical site, it looked like a bunch of ruined houses. But walking around there, the atmosphere of the ancient Roman period was getting to me. The more I walked around, the more Pompeii started to impress me. It felt like I was walking around in 79 AD, but that all the people had gone out for the day.
