Berchtesgaden Things to Do
Sort by: Most Recent | Best Rated | Author's Order

Things To Do: Hintersee
  • Tip Rating:
  • This is a beautiful lake sourrounded by woods and mountains. In winter it will probably be frozen. Often it is frozen enough to walk accross. Also there is skating and curling on the frozen lake. In summer you can take a boat out on the very clear waters of the lake.

    Things To Do: Konigsee
  • Tip Rating:
  • This a a very beautiful and deep lake with Fjord like qualities. The water is so clear it is nearly unbelivable.
It sometimes freezes over in the Winter.

    Things To Do: St Bartholoma
  • Tip Rating:
  • Visit St Bartholoma on Konigsee. You travel out from Konigsee on an electric powered boat. About half way there the engine is switched off and the captain will go the the middle of the boat and after opening the door play his bugle and you will hear it all coming back in a magnificent echo.
When you arrive at St Bartholoma you will find a Pilgramige Church and a former hunting lodge of the Wittesbachs - the Bavarian Royal Family - The Church is still a Church but the hunting Lodge is a Restaurant. In winter, if the lake is not frozen this is as far as you can go by boat. Try to time your journey out to arrive in time for lunch, about 1 pm. After a very good Bavarian Lunch walk through the settlement along the side of the Lake. Follow the path and it will bring you inland pass the site of a snowslide in 1999. It's amazing. Continue along the path until you come to the deer feeding station. If it's around 3 pm you will see the deer down for their dinner. Please keep very quite as they are very nervous and the sight is just lovely. Continue on and back to the Restaurant. Time for a coffee or beer before returning.
On my last visit - January 2003 - the deer feeding appears to have been moved to quite near the restaurant (hunting lodge). I'm not sure if this is permanent or just a temporary situation.

    Things To Do: Ramsau
  • Tip Rating:
  • Beautiful little village with a very famous Church. People keep painting and photographing it.

    Address: Ramsau
Directions: A short journey from Berchtesgaden. Get the 9546 (Hintersee)from Busbahnhof and get off at Ramsau Kirche. You can easily incorporate a visit to Ramsau with a visit to Hintersee. It means a little more walking but what you see it great.

    Things To Do: Obersee
  • Tip Rating:
  • If you are in Berchtesgaden in the Summer you should visit Obersee. This is a beautiful small lake, sourounded by magnificent mountains. Sadly it is only accessable in Summer.

    Address: Obersee
Directions: When traveling out on the Königsee, get a ticket that includes the trip to Salet. After you have visited St Bartholomá, board the next boat to Salet. When you get there follow the pathway and in about 15 minutes you will come to Obersee.

Things To Do: Malerwinkl Ring Trail.
  • Tip Rating:
  • This is a lovely walk which starts just past the ground station of the Jenner cable car. The walk leads you through woodland with a gentle climb. It wanders through the woodland until suddenly you are faced with the most amazing wiew of the Königsee and the St Bartholmá. This is the only place where you can view St Bartholmá without going out on the Königsee on a boat. It is called painters corner because so many people have painted the Königsee and St Bartholmá from here. Continue along the path which winds it's way back to Könogsee through more beautiful scenery. Takes about 1 hour and is very well signposted.

    Address: Jennerbahn (ground station)
Directions: Take the 9541 bus from Berchtesgaden (Kurhaus or Busbahnhof) to Jennerbahn. Get off at the Jennerbahn and walk on about 200 m. The trail starts on the right and as always is signposted.

  • If you ski there's no need to say anymore, but for sightseeing this is a sight not to be missed. You travel up to the top station by 2 person gondola and as you asscend the views are breathtaking. So is the silence. At the top you have magnificent views. Try for a clear day, it makes a huge difference. Have a coffee or a beer at the top station. Good Bavarian food available also.

    Address: Maria Gern
Directions: A short distance outside Berchtesgaden. You can walk buts it's all uphill or get the 9537 bus from Busabhnhof or Rathaus. Very easy to walk back from. There is a walk back through the woods but we were there in January it was frozen and impossible to use.

Things To Do: Kehlstein Haus. - The Eagles Nest
  • Tip Rating:
  • This is the famous Tea House built for Adolf Hitler. There was another tea house he prefered and it appears he did not like the Kehlstein Haus that much. Records show he only visited here about 16 times. You enter through a tunnel and then go up a brass and leather lift (original) into the centre of the building. It remains much as it was. There have been some changes ie. the extended terrace and the modernised kitchen. Also the original furniture (with the exception of the sideboard in the dining room) is missing - some ot it is in the now closed Berchtesgadener Hof Hotel -. The Kehlstein Haus now operates as a Restaurant so you can have a coffee or beer and something to eat as well, if you wish and the profits go to charity.. This is a truely amazing place. The location and the views are unforgetable. When you go out on the terrace climb the short distance to the cross. Even better views here. A must see when in Berchtesgaden. Only open during the summer.
Directions: Get the 9538 bus from Berchtesgaden (Busbahnhof)to Obersalzberg, Hintereck and change to a 9549 for the rest of the journey or better still get a 9549 from the Busbahnhof, so you don't have to change. You can use your Urlabs Ticket on both buses for the part of the journey to Hintereck but pay the fee for the rest as an extra. Try to get a seat at the front. When you get to the parkplatz, book your time down. This is important as RVO bring up the required number of buses so no one gets left behind. Allow a least 1 1/2 hours

    Things To Do: Dokumentation Obersalzberg
  • Tip Rating:
  • Berchtesgaden - Dokumentation Obersalzberg
  • Dokumentation Obersalzberg
  • by kenbac
  • Send Photo to a Friend
  • This is the Documentation Centre opened in 1999 that details the National Socialist era. It is a 'no holds barred', 'no punches pulled', no excuses, description of National Socialism. It’s mainly in German with headline descriptions in English, but you will have no problem understanding it. It's located in the former 'Partie Gasthaus' and part is also in the (formely restricted) military bunkers.

Fantastic tips and photos! The Eagle's Nest looks spectacular. Also, I will remember 'ist hier noch frei' on my trip to Germany next month. Best from New Jersey, Bill

I agree with you on the views from the Eagle's Nest. My number one travel mistake of all times was not taking my camera. I'm planning on going back in 2010, for the Passion Play, and will try to rectify that mistake then, lol. Gary
