Restaurant Name: Gasthaus Bier Adam
Very nice Gasthof, smack in the centre of Berchtesgaden. Lovely ambience. Great food. Very pleasant staff. Sometimes gets very busy, so consider a reservation. There's a "no smoking" area for any one who likes this option. There ia a very extensive bavarian menu. Average price for a meal consisting of a main course (complete) with 2 X 1/2 L. of beer and a schnapps to see you back out to the snow in under €20 per person. With no drink, you can have a substantial meal, again complete, for about €10. You won't need a desert after a main course here. Sample (reduced) menu is available on the net site
Favorite Dish: Schweinshaxn mit Semmelkdodel (Crispy roast pork knuckle with bread dumpling).

Brotzeit Stuberl: Traditional Bavarian Specialities

|
Restaurant Name: Brotzeit Stuberl
This is a small Stuberl on the way into the Schlossplatz from the Marktplatz. I have never eaten there but frequently buy food to take out. There is Crispy Belly Pork, Roast Pork, Schweinhaxn (Crispy Pork Knuckle), Frikendelle (Burgers) and Roast Chickens. The food is delicious. If you are staying self catering and want to take in a meal you won't get much better than here. Biggest problem is buying too much. The biggest surprise is how inexpensive it is. Unfortunately it closes at 6pm an Monday to Friday and 1 pm on Saturday. Closed on Sunday. So you have to eat early, however if you have an oven in your accommodation it will keep perfectly until a while later.
Favorite Dish: Frikendelle & Crispy Belly Pork

Restaurant Name: Cafe Forstner
This is a lovely cafe in the centre of Berchtesgaden. On the ground floor there is a confectionery shop with gorgeous chocolates and cakes. Upstairs is the Cafe. This Cafe is like a good cafe should be. Great ambience, pleasant staff, extensive menu with a variety of coffees, chocolate etc. and of course the cakes. The view is beautiful, whether the sun is shining or snowing. You look out over the centre of town and you have the mountains as a backdrop. You could easily visit this cafe frequently.
Favorite Dish: Hot Chocolate with rum and a cake (any cake that you fancy - choosing is the hard part)

|
Restaurant Name: Echostuberl
A very nice Stuberl on the edge of the water at K?nigsee. Great ambience. If you're cold sit near the heater. Great place for a coffee or beer after a walk around the Malerwinkl Trail or a boat journey on the Konigsee. Stay on for Dinner. Very nice. The buses back to Berchtesgaden finish about 7 pm, but you can call a 4041 Taxi and it will bring you back into town for about 6 Euro, so don't cut short your evening.
Favorite Dish: Wienerschnitzel (A fried escallop of pork, sometimes turkey or veal in breadcrumbs) A good meal will cost less than 10 Euro

Histor. Gaststatte St. Bartholoma: A Magificent Location

Restaurant Name: Histor. Gaststatte St. Bartholoma
This is the restaurant at the St. Bartholoma. It was a hunting lodge belonging to the Wittelsbach Family - The Bavarian Royal Family - who actually went there folowing their abdication in 1918. To-day it is a very pleasant restaurant to spend some time in before returning to Konigsee after experiencing the delights of the St. Bartholoma.
Favorite Dish: Usually just have a beer or a light lunch, ( Idon't think there is such a thing as a light lunch in Bavaria, in reallity). Will be less than than 10 Euro

BillNJ Tue Apr 29, 2008 03:05 UTC Fantastic tips and photos! The Eagle's Nest looks spectacular. Also, I will remember 'ist hier noch frei' on my trip to Germany next month. Best from New Jersey, Bill | lostsooner55 Tue Oct 30, 2007 02:00 UTC I agree with you on the views from the Eagle's Nest. My number one travel mistake of all times was not taking my camera. I'm planning on going back in 2010, for the Passion Play, and will try to rectify that mistake then, lol. Gary | Britannia2 Sat May 12, 2007 20:44 UTC Wonderful pages - I have really enjoyed looking at them. | iandsmith Sat Jan 20, 2007 07:45 UTC Excellent tips, 5 star stuff. I'm off there next month for only my second time and will enjoy it more as a result of your info. |
