Leigh grew in size during the Middle Ages as an important shipping route to London and as a major ship building community. But with the decline of shipbuilding, the fishing and cockling industries took over in the town.
This legacy lives on today in Leigh's Old Town.
Thousands of visitors are drawn annually to the famous cockle sheds which stand alongside numerous pubs, cafes and shops in the old town.
Historic buildings are also scattered along the High Street, including the Old Smithy, rebuilt from two historic cottages in the late 18th-century and now containing a heritage centre. The Leigh Conservation Area, north of the railway line, also has many old terraced houses and cottages dating back centuries.
If you visit during September you may be fortunate enough to catch the Regatta
