One day on a walk round Corfu we chanced upon a sign advertising "Day trips to Albania" and thought that it would make a change from partying all week (I didn't even know Albania was that close), so we booked up the trip. I can't say we woke up early on the morning of the trip because we hadn't even been to bed after clubbing all night. Anyway we caught the 7 o'clock bus to Corfu Town. The ferry took us from Corfu Town to Sarande on the south west coast of Albania in about 2-3hours. We were met by armed police who searched us and stamped our passports. On disembarking the ferry we were met by about 20 children who had previously diving into the clear blue sea, they were after anything they could get off us coins, sweets, pens, etc. We didn't really know what to expect but after a long hot and bumpy coach trip along the coast road stopping occasionally to take photographs we arrived at a set of iron gates. After entering the gates we came across an amazing Roman village at Buthrint. (Please see must see activities for more). From there we climbed a hill to a building, sorry can't remember what it was but it gave us great views over the mountains and plains. On arrival back at the port we went to what seemed like the only hotel for food (Please see restaurants for more info). After food there was time for sightseeing, although there wasn't much in the way of souvenirs, just a few postcards and a local newspaper. Before departing for Corfu we were once again searched by the armed police. All in all it was a memorable trip and I would recommend it to anyone.
THERE ARE MORE PHOTOGRAPHS IN MY TRAVELOGUES. I'm not sure if they still run trips due to the problems in Albania. |
