Our Rural Area

by JudyinPA - last update: May 6, 2008

Roosevelt Dam State Park

A Fishing Trip
This is our part of Pennsylvania. The mountains and woods are missed when we spend time on flat dry land. Our mountains are small in comparrison to the Alps and Rockies, but living at the base of one is the perfect place for us. Great experiences traveling and still the best is coming home to the same old place. Our neighbors are not close. What we see when looking out the windows are sometimes deer and turkey crossing the bank above the house. A quiet rural lifestyle allowing us to travel to the cities for entertainment as tourists.

One of our first vacations was to Switzerland, Austria, Germany and France. That was twenty years ago and I have been back twice since then. The scenery takes your breath away and the old history is there, like you hear about only in school until the time comes to see it for yourself .

Lately we have been trying to see more of our own country. So much to see and so little time allowed off work to go

Hope I can help anyone who is interested in those places I have seen. Please ask me any questions regarding your future travels to these areas.
Spring Flowers

Spring

These are some of the first flowers to appear when spring arrives. It snowed a couple inches after they bloomed. All survived the white stuff.
Husband Fishing

Fishing

April 16th was the first day of fishing in PA. It is the beginning for the fishermen and usually is the best time to catch those fish that have been put in streams over the state a few weeks before. For my husband this is the beginning of going to the cabin, fishing and the start of future summer activities.
Damaged Cabin

Mountain Hide-away

This is typical of the many cabins in the woods and mountains of PA. Ours is used for family and friend gatherings on the weekends. Cookouts and celebrations occur on all holdidays. Some are used strictly for people hunting and fishing but we enjoy sharing with all we know and are always invited for good food, conversation and a game of cards. If you enlarge the cabin you can see a tree has blown onto the roof from one of the wind storms. A surprise for whoever owns this one.
State Park

Greenwood Furnace State Park

This was a fishing lake for my husband while on our cabin trip. It is located near Penn State University and used by hundreds of students in the summer. They offer hiking, swimming, camping and fishing. We used to come here often when living nearby, so it was good to finally get back. It is just a quiet peaceful park to spend some time when you just want to relax.
Typical PA Woods

Poe Valley State Park

There are four State Parks in the area and all have small lakes and streams for fishing. This park is only reachable by dirt road. The lake is a little bigger than the others and so they rent rowboats. They also have camping and a large beach. I am not a person who fishes but always like the quiet and solitude in these parks in springtime. Great reading and walking time.
One Lane

Our Roads

Many of the State Forest roads are not paved and one lane. We like to take a 4 wheel drive vehicle with a full tank of gas and just drive for hours trying to guess what paved road they will intercept.
Quincy, brown & Buster, yellow

Our Travel Buddies

These are our travel buds, Buster and Quincy. They both love to swim and smell every inch of the woods. Their lives revolve around trips to the cabin where they run and swim until exhausted. They run one day and sleep the next.

Hi Judy, As I was uploading some more pictures on Lauterbrunnen I stopped by to visit other pictures and came across yours. You seemed to have enjoyed as much as we did.

So, April 1 is your day, eh? Happy Birthday, Judy. I hope y'all do something foolish and youthful to celebrate. :) BTW, you wouldn't believe the rain we've been having. Massive amounts.
