Neighbourhoods in Stockholm and other Stockholm, Sweden General Tips

Favorite Thing: Stockholm is built on several islands. Between the islands are a number of brigdes, and it is perhaps this presence of water everywhere that has earned Stockholm it's reputation as one of the most beautiful capitals in the world.
Be this as it may, the fact that the different parts of the city are constructed on different islands means that the boundaries between the neighbourhoods are quite distinct and so are the different characters.

I'll try and give a short desciption of the different parts that make up inner city Stockholm in the following tips.
They start on the next general tips. Here is an overview picture to help you on your way...

Fondest Memory: Lying around in the parks in summertime...and sunbathing on a sailing boat in the middle of central Stockholm.

Favorite Thing: Norrmalm can be seen as the center of modern Stockholm. There are a lot of businesses here and expensive shops, and also clubs, bars and restaurants. The prices may be a little higher here than in other parts.
This is also the case with Östermalm. Östermalm, though, is more a neighborhood of broader streets and elegant residences. It is directly to the east of Norrmalm.

Favorite Thing: Gamla Stan is south of Norrmalm and you get there by crossing one of the bridges. One suggestion is going down the street of Drottninggatan and the walk via the small island of Helgeandsholmen, that hosts the parliament building. (See pic)
Gamla Stan ("Old Town") is the site of the original town. The first mention of the name "Stockholm" was in a letter by king Birger jarl in the year 1252, so last year (2002) the city celebrated its 750th anniversary.
Gamla stan is a place to walk slowly through. Many narrow passages and old style buildings in this part of town. Also, the Royal Castle is here.

Favorite Thing: South of Gamla Stan, is Södermalm, or Söder, the southern part of Stockholm. This part of town used to be the home of artists and workers, but not so long ago the area started to become a fashionable and popular place to live, and now it is as expensive, if not more, as the other parts. Many people consider Söder to have a special atmosphere. Especially in eastern part of Söder you can find a lot of really cute neighbourhoods.
