Am I a Virtual Tourist?
When I am at home: yes
I'm sitting behind my PC and travel (surf) around the world and do a lot of 'siteseeing', read stories and experiences from other travelers.
I'm reading books about traveling. The writers adventures, events and conversations with local people are interesting to read.
I'm reading travelmagazines in which people tell their travel stories or in which useful information is mentioned so I can use that for my travels.
Sometimes I'm homesick for the countries I've been, longing for the countries I want to see and now and than thinking 'what am I doing in this little rainy country near the sea?'.
When I'm traveling: no
Then I want to learn facts about the country I am visiting like the culture, meeting local people, eating local food (sometimes this is difficult because I'm a vegetarian) and of course I also want to see the touristic sites everybody wants to see.
I haven't done a RTW trip but I would like to do this some day. When? I don't know. Maybe next year, maybe later. I don't know yet.
On October 9, 2002 I returned from a trip to Suriname, a former territory of The Netherlands. Now I'm busy to built a Suriname page. You can take a look already, but beware, the page isn't finished yet.
Happy traveling and take care.
Taken from a Nepalese 'Good Luck' mantra.
INSTRUCTIONS FOR LIFE
Take into account that great love and great achievements involve great risks. When you lose, don't lose the lesson. Follow the three R's: Respect for self; Respect for others; Responsibility for all your actions. Remember that not getting what you want is sometimes a wonderful stroke of luck. Learn the rules so you know how to break them properly. Don't let a little dispute injure a great friendship. When you realise you've made a mistake, take immediate steps to correct it. Spend some time alone every day. Open your arms to change but don't let go of your values. Remember that silence is sometimes the best answer. Live a good, honorable life. Then when you get older and think back you'll be able to enjoy it for the second time. A loving atmosphere in your home is the foundation for your happiness. In disagreements with loved ones, deal only with the current situation. Don't bring up the past. Share your knowledge. It's a way to achieve immortality. Be gentile with the earth. Once a year, go some place you've never been before. Remember that the best relationship is one in which your love for each other exceeds your need for each other. Judge your success by what you had to give up in order to get it. Approach love and cooking with reckless abandon.
TRAVEL QUOTATIONS
A good traveller has no fixed plans and is not intent on arriving (Lao Tzu) The worst thing about being a tourist is having other tourists recognize you as a tourist (Russell Baker) Travellers never think that THEY are the foreigners (Mason Cooley) A good traveler is one who does not know where he is going to, and a perfect traveler does not know where he came from (Lin Yutang) If we are always arriving and departing, it is also true that we are eternally anchored. One's destination is never a place but rather a new way of looking at things (Henry Miller) |
