The city reading room, Kirovsk, Luhansk region
The reading room of the local library is another attracting place for many young (and not so young) people.
It was interesting for me to read some chapters from the book of the local writer
She collected a lot of materials and wrote a book
Afghan war Memorial, Kirovsk, Luhansk region
Like in many towns and cities of the former Soviet Union, there is an Afghan War memorial in this city, too.
It stands in the city park and represents the mourning pictures of the four soldiers and officers, city residents, who died during their service in Afghanistan in the period from 1982 till 1985.
They are: two young soldiers who were only 19, a 20-year-old sergeant and a 32-year-old major of the medical service.
There is an inscription on the big pylon located over the columns with soldiers images.
The inscription reads,
and living instead of them
we must take care of the most important things
which they did not have time to love enough.
Rest in peace.
We will never forget!
City Park, Kirovsk, Luhansk region, Ukraine
The city park is a nice place for relaxation at any time of the day.
This renovated Park Alley leads to the new city park located next to the stadium.
Old war memorial, Kirovsk, Luhansk region
There are several war memorials in the city.
This one stands in the old city park and is dedicated to the liberators of the city.
This modern war memorial is located in the new city park next to the stadium.
It is also a tribute to the liberators of the city and all those who died during the 1418 hard days of the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945.
Here is a close-up of the War Memorial located in the City Park.
You can see the triumphant statue of a Soviet soldier who took part in liberating the city from the Nazi invaders in 1943.
They Defended Their Motherland
This is how this road display is called.
You can see the faces of the city residents who made themselves famous during the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945.
St.Nickolas Cathedral, Kirovsk, Luhansk region
The city Orthodox cathedral is called
Father Valery is the cathedral dean.
The famous country cathedral of Luhansk region located in the neighboring village of Golubivka (about 10 km to the north of Kirovsk) bears the same name and is called after St.Nickolas.
Another cathedral located in the suburbs is called St.Panteleimon Cathedral.
It is located in the settlement of Chervonogvardeyskoye ("Red Guards Settlement") rather far from the city center - about ten miles.
(See also the travelogue).
The northern cross, Kirovsk, Luhansk region
Like in many European cities you can see road crosses in this city, too.
There is a traditional Orthodox inscription Save and Safeguard on each of them.
They were erected on the four sides of the city and consecrated by the city priests.
This one is in the north.
I liked the view and could not help taking a picture of it. I stopped the cab and got out to take a couple of pictures here.
The city entrance roadside markers, Kirovsk
This city entry roadside marker became one of the symbols of Kirovsk.
Maria, the local museum keeper, recommended me to take a cab and to go there.
The roadside marker is located on the southern border of Kirovsk on the road leading to Stakhanov.
It depicts a proud coalminer.
The letters on the city marker are nice too: they run from top to bottom like those in Japan, which make this marker special too.
Old City Park, Kirovsk, Luhansk region, Ukraine
There is an old park on the western outskirts of the city that is not frequented any more, but still has several statues and memorials.
This is the eagle monument, the steppe eagle being the symbol of courage of the first settlers of the area.
This huge head is from a Russian fairy tale. It is the head of a giant. According to the fairy tale, it could speak and tell the wandering knights what to do or where to go. It could also destroy them by blowing them off their horses. Ruslan, a famous Russian fairy tale hero, defeated the head.
The statue stands in the old city park built after World War II.
It used to be painted red before, but now is without paint. It is still called jokingly by the local residents Little Red Riding Hood (the giant’s helmet used to be painted red many years ago).
Town's business card, Kirovsk
There is such phone service in many towns and cities. You can call there any time if you feel down and out and have no one to help you. We call that service phone of trust.
The phone number is +38 06446 4 48 03
Other useful phone numbers are in the entrance hall of the City Council in the main square.
