Getting TO/AROUND: The fastest and the most reliable means of geeting around in Kiev is, of course, the underground called the Metro there. Kiev has an efficient subway (Metro) consisting of about 40 stations. You only have to be able to read the signs in Ukrainian. No English signs for the present. There are lots of bus, trolley bus and streetcar routes in the Ukrainian capital. The metro fare is usually 50 kopecks (10C) - you have to buy a plastic token at the booking-office located at the entrance to the metro station. There are minibuses run by private companies that charge a bit more. It’s always better to order a taxi by dialing 058 (or several other numbers) in Kiev. You can travel in all directions by three lines containing more than 40 stations, forever expanding. Personally I prefer traveling by the metro wherever I need to go in Kiev. You only have to know the location and have the metro map about you...

Transportation: If You Are in a Hurry

Getting TO/AROUND: If you are in a hurry and prefer neither underground railway nor buses, you can call a taxi. There are lots of offers and this is one of them. You can call taxi yourself or ask the receptionist at your hotel or your local friends to do it for you. You can hire a taxi from ranks at any bus stop throughout the city. The taxi fare about the city is about $5-6, up to $10. If you wish to make a longer journey, say, out of the city area, it’s a good idea to arrange fare calculations with the driver before starting.

Getting TO/AROUND: You can travel from Kiev for a trip around Ukraine by modern comfortable trains where you can get a compartment seat for an average price of about $25-30. A trip from Kiev to the Far East of Ukraine, to Luhansk, will take you about 15 hours in a sleeping car of a fast train (#20). Now there are modern express trains (imitation of the German ICE...) to Kharkiv and Dnipropetrovsk. Such an express train covers the distance to Kharkiv in 5.5 hours. You can also get to Kiev by bus, take a look at www.autolux.com.ua (a web site of a bus transport company in Kiev, available also in English).

You only have to know the direction and the name of the street you are going to. Of course, the affable drivers and Kievites will help you find the way.
