There are several holiday centers along the bank of the Seversky Donets on the city beach. These centers consist of bungalows and include bars, sports grounds, saunas and other conveniences that are good for a weekend stay. This bar is called Barmaley. It is the best place for barbeques and parties. The bar is located at "Dessyulia" holiday home on Red Ravine Block. The holiday home offers two-storey houses consisting of three rooms (70 UAH -$15 for one bed a day) and bungalows (65 UAH - $13 a day) including all modern conveniences, billiards, table tennis, sauna, car parking. You can call to reserve a house for a weekend: 41 10 06 (on weekends) and 53 91 17 (on week days)People coming to the city beach on the right bank of the Seversky Donets do not necessarily bathe there for the water is far from being pure and the current is strong. If you do bathe, do not forget to take a shower in the hotel afterwards.

If time permits, you can also see the Sea of Luhansk, an artificial lake at the River Olkhovka on the western outskirts of the city. You can have lunch at "Apsny" Abkhazian restaurant at the lakeshore where you can also see and take pictures of the unique century-old willow-tree, the oldest in the city. There is a private beach (entrance fee 5 UAH) and you can just sit quietly and do a bit of people watching.

Off The Beaten Path: Our Apartment House

This is the picture of our apartment house located on the outskirts of the city not far from the highest point in the city that is 93 m above sea level. The apartment house consists of three blocks and 108 apartments. It's a typical modern nine-storey apartment house in Luhansk. It is a special apartment house for it is called Doctors' House because the majority of apartments belong to medical workers. We live on the ninth floor in a three-room apartment with the total area of 68 sq.m, two balconies and a telephone. The house has elevators, telephones, all modern conveniences and flowerbeds full of flowers and nice trees that adorn the entrance. Each of the three block entrance doors has a lock with a three-digit code. So if you pay a surprise visit to us without knowing the three-digit code, you will have to wait outside on the bench enjoying our fresh air. The proximity to nature is the greatest merit of our district. We enjoy fresh air from the fields and woods of the nearby city environs and saunter in the woods regularly visiting "our ravine" and "our waterfall". There are dozens of such houses in the city now, though not all of them have secure iron entrance doors. These apartment houses have become an inalienable part of the city landscape. The highest apartment houses in Luhansk consist of 16 floors.

The proximity to nature is the greatest merit of our district. We enjoy fresh air from the fields and woods of the nearby city environs and saunter in the woods regularly visiting "our ravine" and "our waterfall". The apartment houses like ours have become an inalienable part of the city landscape. The highest apartment houses in Luhansk consist of 16 floors. Our apartment house has nice trees and the entrance, flowerbeds and children's playground unlike many other apartment houses, especially downtown and on the outskirts whose yards and entrances leave much to be desired... I have marked our apartment on the ninth floor for you on Picture 1: 1- kitchen, 2 - living-room, 3 - balcony.

Off The Beaten Path: Steam Locomotive Monument
|
Tip Rating: |

This locomotive bears the number 1,000 and was manufactured in November 1949. It stands as a monument to the labor enthusiasm of the post-war workers of the locomotive works who worked day and night to manufacture as many locomotives for the country as they could in those grave post-war conditions. The workers "wanted to congratulate their beloved leader Joseph Stalin" who was 70 in December 1949. This one was the 1,000th post-war locomotive , which was a great labor achievement at that time. The locomotive's serial number is series CO-17, which means Sergo Ordzhonikidze. That was the name of the minister of transport in the Stalin's Cabinet of Ministers. So the locomotive was called after the then transport minister, which was a great honor at that time. Unfortunately that honor did not save Sergo Ordzhonikidze himself from being accused of high treason. Trying to avoid the public disgrace, he committed suicide in February 1937. The monument is located on the right bank of the River Luhanka opposite the entrance to the diesel locomotive works.

Off The Beaten Path: Our Railway Station
|
Tip Rating: |

Our railway station was built in 1980. It has a unique form and is very spacious and reconditioned. It is connected with downtown by the bridge built in 1995 and is easy to reach by car. There are lots of trains to different cities in Ukraine and Russia. Be careful driving to the station when it rains: the water pipes under the road do not function, so you may get into a huge lake... The station has just been refurbished and looks quite nice. There are booking offices on the second floor, a cafe on the platform, "Express" restaurant and two cafes inside and waiting halls on both floors.

Off The Beaten Path: St.Peter and St.Paul's Cathedral
|
Tip Rating: |

Here are some pictures of our St.Peter and St.Paul Cathedral built in the middle of the 19th century, - the only Orthodox cathedral that survived the frantic atheist campaign of the thirties when all the temples were blown up by the Communist authorities who presented that militant atheist campagne as "the will of the citizens". St.Peter and St.Paul Cathedral is located in Stone Ford District , the oldest district in the city. The cathedral survived the ruthless Communist era due to the fact that in the thirties it was turned into a cinema and a dance club. All the mural icons were painted over and the altar architecture was turned into an empty wall with a screen. Now the cathedral has a restored belfry that appeared ten years ago and had been built according to the old pictures of the cathedral and a restored dome. This is the place where our Luhansk Icon of the Most Holy Mother of God is kept. The icon is located to the left of the altar.

This stone lies next to the chapel built at the grave of Philip of Luhansk (1858 - 1956) at the city's old southern cemetery. This stone was a piece of a rotten oak trunk that lay in an old park and was turned into stone by Philip when the sneering young Communists demanded a miracle of him in the thirties. Philip was an elder who served as a dean of the local cathedral was famous for his miracles. He healed people after the Most Holy Mother of God had appeared before him and empowered him to do so on June 13, 1905. Philip of Luhansk passed away on the day of his birth on November 22, 1956 in Luhansk. Now there is a chapel over his grave. The grave of Philip of Luhansk is a place of pilgrimage of many Orthodox Christians. More information: in the booklet of Archimandrite Vladimir (Orachev) about Philip of Luhansk. It is available on the Internet (and still under construction): http://luhansk.zxq.net/

This is one of the oldest remaining houses in Dahl Street, formerly called English Street, the first street in the city. The street led to the foundry in the 18th century. A lot of foreign entrepreneurs invited to Russia by Catherine the Second used to live in their mansions in that street. So this is one of the mansions in Dahl Street. Now this street is famous for Dahl's House where Vladimir Dahl, a famous Russian writer, lexicographer, public figure and a friend of Alexander Pushkin was born on November 22, 1801.

About USD 100 one-way. When I come over I am thinking of doing that. Maybe something to add in your tip? | Yaqui Tue Jun 30, 2009 19:07 UTC Howdy Victor! Like I said before you live in a fabulous city. I still cannot get over how many wonderful museums, fountains, monuments, statues, squares, and those buildings have so much charm.
