City symbols, Lutugino
The residents of Lutugino celebrate their City Day on the last weekend of September.
In 2012 it was on September 29.
The festivities program includes folk lore concerts, competitions and shows.
Memorial plaque at 1 Red Patisans Street, Lutugino
Memorial plaques are not numerous, but you can notice some during your town tour.
They are mostly on the walls of apartment houses.
I saw one on the walls of an old private house at 1 Red Partisans Street.
The plaque reads that the director of the local Roller factory used to live here.
I saw other two plaques in Lutuhine: one is on the walls of the railway station and another one is on an apartment house at the corner of Lenin Street. The railway station memorial plaque is made of wrought iron and looks more artistic, unlike other specimen of factory-stamped plaques. The railway station memorial plaque reminds us of the Civil War days of 1919 when the Soviet Power, that was ousting the former government forces, was winning in the area.
There is a memorial plaque on the War Memorial at the entrance to the Roller Factory. It’s an integral part of the monument and, strictly speaking, is not a separate memorial plaque, like dozens of noticeable plaques that can be seen on buildings in many towns and cities of Ukraine.
Coat-of-arms of Lutuhine County
Lutuhine is a county center and has both town and county administration buildings.
Lutuhine County administration building is in Lenin Street next to the bus stop of buses departing to Luhansk.
You can see the coat-of-arms of Lutuhine County as you enter the administration building.
The coat-of-arms represents a shield with symbols of the country: a black coal mine slug heap, two crossed air hammers used by coalminers and a roller manufactured at the local Roller Factory that is well-known for its products in many countries.
The shield has a frame of wheat ears and the Ukrainian flag on top. The shield is encircled with branches of a snowball-tree, a symbol of Ukraine, and an embroidered towel. The inscription on the top embroidered towel reads, %cfLutuhine County%c* in Ukrainian.
The Roller Factory in Lutuhine used to be very famous for its products twenty years ago.
Leonid Lutugin exhibition at School # 1
There is an exhibition devoted to the life and activities of Leonid Lutugin (1864-1915) at School # 1 where the town museum is located.
The school students study his biography and his contribution to the development of the area.

Three Saints Cathedral, Lutugino
The town church is called Three Saints Cathedral.
The parish was formed in 1994.
The church building stood in ruins and there were only walls.
It was destroyed in the thirties of the last century during the militant Bolshevik atheist campaign.
The cathedral acquired the present state in 2005.
One of the cathedral halls is dedicated to Iversk-root Icon of the Most Holy Mother of God.
That icon is especially revered here.
The Cathedral's Feast Day is on February 12 when the Orthodox feast of Three Saints is observed.
Another local church holiday is observed on October 25 by the local Orthodox parish. It is the day of Iversk-root icon of the Mother of God.
The cathedral keeps particles of remains of more than fifty Russian saints and is proud of it.
The archpriest if Father Alexander (Kuznetsov).
The parish offers free charity lunches for people with scanty means. There is a Sunday school at the cathedral.
The interior decoration is still under way.
Another Orthodox place is St.Nickolas Chapel at the territory of the Steel Rolls factory, but there is no admission to outsiders there. I checked it out, take my word for it...

Coat-of-arms
The main branches of the industry of Lutuhine are coal mining and metallurgical industry. Therefore the shield is divided into black (coal) and red (fire) backgrounds.
You can see wavy silver lines on the black background. They symbolize the geological structure of district that is rich in deposits of coal, limestone, sand and clay.
The silver pick and the hammer symbolize geological research and coal mining in the area.
The town bears the name of Leonid Lutugin (1864-1915), an outstanding Russian geologist who carefully studied the area’s geology for 22 years.
The city is famous for its ironware and manufacture of rollers. The gear column symbolizes the well-known product of the town industry - rollers, and its color refers to the high quality of their production. Besides, the gear column is associated with the coal output (mine conveyor, a coalmining combine, etc.)
In 1898 a Belgian joint-stock company set up a factory here. More than a hundred years ago Belgian industrialists regarded this part of the Donets Basin as "the Belgium’s tenth province".
Thanks to their great contribution to the development of industry in this area it became an advanced industrial territory.
The Belgian contribution to the industry of territory is also reflected at the coat-of-arms.
The Belgian contribution is displayed by the colors of the town’s coat-of-arms: black, yellow and red that are the colors of the Belgian flag.
The coat-of-arms was approved by the decision of town council session on September 27, 2002.
The authors of the coat-of-arms are O.A.Zhytnychenko and A.V.Zakoretskyi.

"The Cossacks? Letter" at the conference center
The Cossacks’ Letter is famous today owing to the great painting by Ilya Repin, a well-known 19th-century Russian painter, that he painted in 1878-1891.
The full name of the canvas is, “Zaporozhian Cossacks of Ukraine Writing a Letter to the Turkish Sultan”.
The painting captured some of the rough spirit of independence and brotherhood of the Zaporozhian Cossacks of Ukraine.
The canvas is a careful reconstruction of a possible scene in the seventeenth century.
The painting and the letter both reflect a part of the Ukrainian nation’s heritage.
I noticed this painting is somehow very popular with the town residents for I saw it in two different institutions hanging on the wall in an honorable place. This picture is a symbol too.
