Visiting Orthodox Churches

You can attend a service at St.Nickolas Cathedral in Karl Marx Street.
This cathedral was built in 1948.
There is St.Joakim and St.Anna Chapel located in the city park.
You can also see Orthodox Crosses at every entrance to the city.
It is a new tradition that appeared and is used in many towns and cities of Luhansk (and not only) region.

The Soviet Cosmonaut's Memorial

If you walk along Lenin Street and past the building of the City Council, you might be surprized to see this black monument.
It commemorates the place where there was a house before the new apartment houses were built there. The house belonged to the Shonins.
This memorial is dedicated to the Soviet cosmonaut, General Georgiy Shonin (August 3, 1935 - April 7, 1997) who was born and lived in that house.
He flew into space on board "Soyuz-6" together with board engineer Valery Kubassov from October 11 till October 16, 1969 as the spaceship commander.
"Soyuz-6" spent 117 hours and 42 minutes on the orbit.
For the first time in history the cosmonauts made the first metal welding tests in the orbit.
Together with the crews of "Soyuz-7" and "Soyuz-8" who were in the orbit at the same time, Colonel Shonin worked in the open space as a member of the large group of cosmonauts.
Soon after the return to the Earth Georgiy Shonin became a Hero of the Soviet Union on October 22, 1969.

Leaders and Activists

Another monument worth visiting is, of course, Lenin monument in front of the City Council building.
Nothing special about it, just another monument to the "beloved" leader of the proletariat.
Very special is the Chernobyl memorial located opposite St.Joakim and St.Anna Chapel in the city park.
The Young Guards memorial located near the Leisure Center is very impressive indeed.
You can see the tombs of the leaders of that young people's underground organization.
It was active in Rovenki during the Nazi occupation in 1942-1943.
The young antifascists were betrayed, seized, tortured by the Nazis.
The young patriots were savagely murdered by the Nazis in January 1943, just one month before the area was liberated by the Soviet Army.
The black wall of the Young Guards memorial contains an inscription that reads,

Explore the City Architecture

Drive along Karl Marx Street and turn right after you reach "City Center" bus stop.
You will get to Heroes Square and can start exploring from here.
If you turn right, you will see the monument to the 2,000th Jubilee of Christianity.
If you turn left, you will see the monument to Revolution Fighters and then proceed to School #5.
Next to that school you will see Young Guards Square with the masterpiece of the Soviet architecture: the city leisure center.
This leisure center was the Soviet government's gift to the glorious coalminers of Rovenki.
It has always been the city pride.

Enjoy a Stroll in the City Park

The city park is located in the area that follows after you reach "City Center" bus stop and then turn left.
You can see a war memorial at the entrance and the central school opposite it.
The city park is called

Heroes Park.

Downtown Monuments

I managed to visit several downtown monuments, among them:
-> Christianity Jubilee monument (dedicated in 2000);
-> Revolution Fighters monument;
-> Young Guards Memorial;
-> Young Guards monument in Lenin Street;
-> Great Patriotic War memorial at the entrance to the city park.

Why not take a walk in the city park?
You can see the chapel and Chernobyl memorial as well as new V.I.P.'s mansions located just nearby.

A Stroll Along Lenin Street

If you are in Heroes Square, walk past Christianity Jubilee monument along Lenin Street.
It is especially nice in the summer when all the trees are green.
There are several shops, a cafe, the City Council building there.
