Our group during the picnic - Yelan'

Our group during the picnic

Have a Picnic in the Woods

During our visit to the Quincentenary Oak we chose a place in the woods to pause for a picnic.
We had some food and sat down to eat a bit and to talk.
It was a great experience.

Pilgrims have arrived! - Yelan'

Pilgrims have arrived!

Meet the Pilgrims

Since the khutor of Yelan is very small, liturgies at the local church are not frequent.
You can follow the liturgy schedule and read the information on the board located on the church fence.
The biggest liturgy is St.John the Evangelist's Day - the Feast Day of the local church.
We were privileged and honored to attend that holiday in October 2009 and 2010.
St.John the Evangelist Church is always full of pilgrims who arrive from the neighboring villages and towns, as well as from Luhansk or Donetsk, Ukraine.
They will be awfully glad if they meet you, listen to your speech, take a picture with you and take a look at your photos you have brought with you.
They will be especially happy if they find out you have arrived in the footsteps of Elder Philip whom you revere.

Walking along School Street - Yelan'

Walking along School Street

Explore School Street

School Street is the main street of Yelan.
There are two other streets:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Round Street
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Free Street
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
School Street leads to the century-old school building. There was an elementary school there, but now only three school students have remained, so the school was closed and the students are taken to the neighboring big khutor to study there.
If you walk up the street, you will reach the village pond.
The water is far from being clean there and there is a lot of silt on the bottom of the pond.
Some locals try angling here, others lie in the sun on the beach.
The datcha residents don't mind bathing there. I did. I decided not to take a risk and stayed at the beach.
Father Sergius is our guide in the church - Yelan'
Father Sergius is our guide in the church
The Myrrh-streaming Icon
Father Sergius, the cathedral dean, took us around the church and told us its story.
Three years ago a myrrh-streaming icon appeared in the church.
It is the Icon of the Most Holy Mother of God “Axion Estin” (“It is Truly Meet”).
This icon's feast day is on June 11.
As Father Sergius said, the appearance of the myrrh-streaming Icon in our time may well signify a period of further great trials for the Russian Orthodox Church and, at the same time, offer consolation that the Virgin Mary will be a Protectress of the faithful: Unto whomsoever much is given, of him shall much be required.
Glory be to Our Lord Jesus Christ
for manifesting the Myrrh-Streaming Icon of the Virgin Mary!
St.John the Evangelist Church in Yelan - Yelan'
St.John the Evangelist Church in Yelan
St.John the Evangelist's Church
The present church building replaced the old wooden Cossacks church located in what is now a big field.
In 1919 within the framework of their militant atheist campaign the Bolsheviks disassembled the old wooden church without destroying it and built a house in School Street that they wanted to use as the village club.
That plan failed. The villagers and the Cossacks did not allow their children to visit that new club and never went there themselves.
As a result, there was not a single dance or a movie show at the newly built club.
One day the village Cossacks rebuilt the interior and installed the altar. The villagers brought the old icons that they had kept in their homes. The new building was turned into a church again.
It was in 1920.
There are a lot of icons there including the old St.Nickolas icon. This icon was taken by Russian Cossacks to four wars. So it can be called a battle icon.
The church's Feast Day on October 9 when the Russian Orthodox church celebrates the Feast Day of St.John the Evangelist.
Elder Philip's Column inside the church - Yelan'
Elder Philip's Column inside the church
Touch Elder Philip's Column
We read and heard about the place where Elder Philip of Luhansk (1858-1956) used to stand during the liturgy.
But only in October during the celebration of the church Feast day we found out where it was.
The locals who still remembered Elder Philip told us about it.
Elder Philip's Column is located to the left of the entrance.
There is the icon of St.Matrona of Moscow on it now.
Elder Philip used to lean against the column with his both hands or embrace the column and pray.
St.Paraskeva Pyatnitsa's icon in Yelan - Yelan'
St.Paraskeva Pyatnitsa's icon in Yelan
St.Paraskeva Friday Icon
This icon is located to the right of the altar.
It is inside a church cover under glass.
Father Sergius, the catehdral dean, told us a story about this icon.
It is a replica of the miraculous icon not of human making. It appeared on an oak for a laysister in 1720.
They say the original of the icon was saved by the Cosscaks from destruction when they took it outside Russia during their emigration. The replica of the original miraculous icon was ordered by the Russian Cossacks who fled to France and took this supernatural icon with them.
As a matter of fact, the cult of Paraskeva (“Friday” in Greek) does not refer to one female saint. It unified the worship of four female martyr saints:
- a Paraskeva of Rome, who lived in the 2nd century and whose feast day was celebrated on July 26;
- a Paraskeva of Iconia who lived in the 4th century and whose feast was on October 28;
- a third of uncertain origin whose feast was on March 20;
- and finally, an 11th-century Balkan saint whose feast was on July 14. Her image in Russia conflated the lives of both Paraskeva of Rome and of Iconia. In the Balkans Paraskeva was known as Petka or Pyatnitsa (‘Friday’ in Slavonic, “pyatnitsa” in Russian). This name was adopted for her cult in medieval Rus and it is under this name that the Russian Orthodox church celebrates her feast on 28 October.
The name Paraskeva has associations with the Friday of the Passion and she subsequently became venerated each Friday of the week.
Personal depictions of Paraskeva Pyatnitsa appeared in Russian art, mainly in Novgorod and Pskov, around the 13th century.
Troparion of St Paraskeva
Ready for godliness,
O namesake of preparedness,
thou didst inherit as a dwelling a faith worthy of thy name.
O prize-winning Paraskeva,
thou dost pour forth healings
and art interceding for our souls.
The village school - Yelan'
The village school
Visiting the Old School
This century-old building has housed the local elementary school until recently.
There are only three school students left, so the school has been closed and the students have to take a school bus to a neighboring khutor.
Elder Philip of Luhansk (1858-1956) used to visit this school during his stay in Yelan too.
He would talk to the kids and tell them lots of different stories.
Also, the school was a kind of a community club then.
Now it could be turned into a village museum provided the due financing is there.
I was allowed to hold Barrier for a moment - Yelan'
I was allowed to hold Barrier for a moment
Watch Barrier
Barrier is a nice horse.
He belongs to Father Sergiy, the archpriest of St.John the Evangelist Church.
Barrier lives in the church courtyard of the khutor of Mozhayevka and arrives to Yelan on every Feast Day, October 9.
Yuriy takes care of Barrier.
It was funny to see how the horse cart drawn by Barrier rode around the church.
I was totally unprepared for it and was very surprised.
Then, after the Feast Day was over, Barrier took a nun back to Mozhayevka (about eight miles).
