Picturesque Countryside

During my business trips to Westerwald as an interpreter I managed to visit Wissen two times.
The full name of the town is Wissen-an-der-Sieg.
It is located in a picturesque countryside on the idyllic banks of the River Sieg.
There are dozens of smaller rivers and streams in this area. Their valleys are good places for hiking.
There are marked hiking routes with the total length of 320 km (about 200 miles) around the town.
The town itself is unique for it is nationally recognized as an air resort.
It lies in a hilly countryside located between 130 meters (426 ft) and 400 meters (1.312 ft) above sea level.
Wissen is located only 70 km/43.5 miles to the east of Cologne. It’s a good place for people who enjoy “green tourism” and quiet relaxing atmosphere.

The town’s population is only 9,100 inhabitants.
No matter how small the town is, it can offer a lot to its visitors.
The town has a lot of tourist things at its disposal: restaurants, hotels and inns, stores , museums, camping places, family leisure centers, clubs and sports facilities to satisfy almost any taste.
There are numerous swimming-pools, horse riding grounds, cycling and tennis clubs.
“Grube Bindeweide” (a former iron mine), the local lore museum, monasteries, castles, churches and cathedrals, etc. are the things that attract visitors of Wissen.
Walking along the streets I marveled at the town architecture, its old churches and modern buildings.

The romantic Schloss Schönstein (Schönstein castle) built during several centuries from the 13th till the 18th century and located on the outskirts of Wissen is one of the favorite tourist destinations and a must of the town visitors.
Heisterkapelle dating back to 1714 is another attraction in Schönstein.
