Austria - the Water Kingdom

The name of this article - Where Anyone Can Live Like an Emperor - is the tourist slogan I have often heard and seen in different villages and towns we visited in this province.
I had the privilege of spending three weeks in Upper Austria in the summer of 2003. I was an interpreter of a kids group from Luhansk region. Our trip was sponsored by Global-2000.
It was an unforgettable experience. I could see small towns, villages and big cities, mountains and caves, rivers, streams and lakes.
We stayed at Lake Attersee – the biggest inland lake of Austria.
We got suntanned, had a nice relaxation, took part in the folk holidays, learnt about the customs, made several day trips and met a lot of wonderful people.
We did not visit the province’s capital Linz, but paid a visit to several Attersee Cities and could enjoy the countryside, the architecture, the fresh air and the pure water; got to know the local customs and holidays and even took part in Fronleichnam, a Catholic holiday observed on the second Thursday after Whitsunday.
We made sure that the man and the nature could coexist peacefully enriching one another and not destroying the God’s beauty.
This province has long been a source of inspiration for many artists who came to live and to work here: Anton Bruckner, Gustav Klimt and others. The region is rich in cultural life. There are numerous festivals and holidays here such as Regatta Festival, River Gallery festival, musical festivals that are known in German as

“Sommerspiele”, "Opernfestspiele”, "Schlosskonzerte”, “Musiksommer”, “Donaufestwochen”, “”Sommerfestival” and many others. People value the cultural legacy very much and are very active in all the festivals.

Landscapes for Inspiration

Upper Austria is a land of tourists, too. Wherever we went, we saw mountain-bikers, school students’ groups and tourist buses exploring the countryside, towns and cities.
There are a lot of things for tourists: the villages like the one we stayed at are full of guesthouses and inns, many kinds of sports are well developed here.
It was impressive how many opportunities for tourism the young people enjoy. They can travel easily from one part of the country to another enjoying low prices, attractive destinations and wonderful scenery.
You can visit lots of interesting museums and exhibitions practically in every town and city of Upper Austria. Even small villages have their own historical sites that they treasure very much.

Kulturland Oberoesterreich

I was glad to visit Hallstatt - the UNESCO World Culture and Nature Region , a “white gold” area where they used to extract salt in the mountains hundreds years ago.
When I heard some statistic data about Upper Austria, I was very impressed indeed.

The area has about 250 museums, 19 fortresses, 48 castles and 9 monasteries; 8 caves open for public; 12 nostalgia railways.

The inhabitants of Upper Austria make about 4.5 million day tours, which gives about 119 million Euro to the province budget. Besides, an average city and town tourist spends 92 Euro daily whereas an average “Kongressgast” (congress guest) spends about 300 Euro a day. Isn’t that amazing!

So the tourism infrastructure is superb and it’s simply marvelous to be there! You just want to see and to experience more and more.

I do hope I will have another chance of visiting that wonderful piece of this marvelous world!
