Dubrovnik was my first stop in Croatia and this place determined the length of time I'd spend in the country. At first (on the ferry ride here from Italy), I was going to spend a few days in Dubrovnik and Split before heading out of the country via Zagreb into Slovenia. After my ferry had docked, I was immediately impressed by this land, a place that I'd never heard of until I'd arrived in Italy.
Once inside a local residence, the family with whom I'd be staying while in Dubrovnik, I became fascinated by the recent history of Croatia and its people. I immediately headed to the bookstore, bought a Croatian Lonely Planet travel book and spent almost three weeks in the country, reading every single page of the book, learning about the history of this magnificent place. The family I stayed with in Dubrovnik was the best view I'd get of the country, they shared stories of their neighborhood being shelled and set on fire during the war of independence during the early 90s. The son of the family, somewhere in his 20's, told me of the days he sat on his roof, watching the rockets and artilary hit the distant hills and parts of the old town. Dubrovnik should be on every traveler's itinerary even though it is one of the southernmost cities in the country.
- Pros:Really nice architecture, interesting city walls, friendly people, relaxed atmosphere
- Cons:Long walk to the beach (in Lapad and Babun Kuk), not too many sights inside the city walls.
- In a nutshell:Dubrovnik- Old remnants, architecture combined with good beaches and pizza
