I had quite a fun time in Brussels, even though there isn't that much in the city to keep you busy for more than a day or so. There are the obvious sights, the Manneken Pis, Grand Place, Royal Palace, City park, Botanical gardens, Atomium, Mini-Europe, etc!!! Here's some history about Brussels. Brussels takes its name from Broekzele, or "village of the marsh", which grew up in the sixth century on the trade route between Cologne and the towns of Bruges and Ghent. Under the Habsburgs, the town flourished, eventually becoming capital of the Spanish Netherlands; later Brussels took turns with The Hague as capital of the new United Kingdom of the Netherlands. In the nineteenth century it became the capital of newly-independent Belgium, and was kitted out with all the attributes of a modern European capital. Since World War II, the city's appointment as headquarters of both NATO and the EU has instigated many major development projects, not least a rudimentary metro system.
