At the time New Yorkers were marking the anniversary of the attacks on their city and there was a sense of anxiety in the air. However, in the short time I was there I warmed to New York immensely. We visited the standard tourist sights – Liberty Island, the Empire State Building and Central Park. While walking alone through southern Manhattan, I stumbled across the site of the World Trade Centre. Now simply a colossal hole in the ground, the TV pictures with which everyone is so familiar seem hard to reconcile with so sterile a location. I made my way slowly back up 8th Avenue, reflecting on the past three months and how privileged I was to have seen so much of this often frenetic, always fascinating continent.
