You would be probably surprised to learn that all the three names in the title of this page are the names of one and the same place. Voskresensk is the name of the town that it had before the communist revolution of 1917, Istra is the new name (still in place) of the town, and New Jerusalem is the name of the monastery that makes this town worth a visit! It was founded in the 16th century by Patriarch Nikon (the head of the Russian Church). The monastry was closed for a long period, now it is slowly recovering.
The neighborhood of the monastery is a popular picnick and dacha area. There are several museums inside the museum and around, worth while seeing. If the wheather is good and you think of an off-the-beaten, go there: you won't be disappointed! |
