Fertile land and the big lake

Nyanza and Western province are dominated by the neighborhood to Uganda and the proximity of Lake Victoria. So fishing is the main income at least in the lakeside communities. There is farming further inland, and as the land is fertile, people could have a rather good income - theoretically at least. Most villages, however, lack access to regional markets, and even sugarcane (which is farmed in the area) and sugar are more expensive in local shops than in Nairobi. One of the reasons is the bad infrastructure and, in a certain way, the "ethnic" element of Kenyan politics: the predominant population groups in Western and Nyanza are Luos and Luhyas, traditionally "competitors" of the Kikuyu who so far secured provided two of the country┬┤s presidents.
