Lodz has many attributes - the "Polish Manchester" or the "promised land". It used to be the heart of Polish textile industry in 19th century, and nowadays itīs a vivid nightlife spot, full of art deco and industrial architecture. Itīs easy to get there from Warsaw, even as a day trip. If you want to immerge into old Lodz in advance and like long, epic novels, I recommend "promised land" by Wladyslaw Reymont. It depicts the fate of three friends and entrepreneurs - one Polish, one Jewish, one German - during the boom years of industrialization. Itīs not without using stereotypes, but gives a good impression of the atmosphere in the factories and salons |
After the end of Communism, the part of the industrialists who made Lodz change from a meagre village to a bustling city were regarded as important enough to comemorate them with a monument on Piotrkowska road - the three fabricants, also symbolising the multiethnicity of old Lodz where - Poles, Jews and Germans made up about one third of the population each |
