Obvious reason to visit Philly is the US history that abounds there. If you only get to see the Independence Hall it will have been worth your trip.

|  | This symbol of freedom in the US, says very simply "Proclaim liberty throughout all the land unto all the inhabitants thereof - Lev. XXV, v. x. By order of the Assembly of the Province of Pensylvania [sic] for the State House in Philada."
This was the bell that was rung when America declared publicly for the first time its independence on July 8, 1776. (the actual document declaring independence was signed on July 4, 1776 of course).
