"Glen Canyon Dam and Lake Powell" Top 5 Page for this destination Glen Canyon National Recreation Area by Martin_S.

Glen Canyon National Recreation Area includes Lake Powell and also the Glen Canyon Dam, so both will be included here. This picture shows just a small tiny part of the Lake Powell area, one marina and some of the valleys and inlets that are typical of the Lake. The area around Page is dotted with several marinas where you can rent a small boat to a fancy crusier or house boat, for an hour, a day or even a month as suits your vacation time.

Hard to believe that this scene is in the middle of a desert, the building of the Glen Canyon Dam created a water wonderwold of valleys, cliffs and stone for you to explore. This is one place that is well worth spending some time exploring.

This is a picture of the Glen Canyon Dam as seen from the visitors center, it is what makes Lake Powell...it also controls the water levels on the Grand Canyon, so if you raft on the Colorado River below the dam you will be assured of a steady flow with little fluctuation between years since even as water levels decrease in Lake Powell, the dam is required by contract to release a certain amount of water...
Just a few facts that are of interest:
It took from 1957 to 1964 to construct the dam, it is 216 meters high and 475 meters across the top...and the pure VOLUME of concrete is 3,750,000 cubic meters..and produces 1,296,000 kilowatts of power. The amount of water held back by the dam is 32,336 million cubic meters when full

Pros and Cons
  • Pros:Beautiful area with plenty of "private" areas to be found.
  • Cons:Did not find any on this trip
  • In a nutshell:Take your time here, boat, swim, even fish, relax.
