  • Favorite Thing: The Grand Canal is the largest canal in Venice and effectively divides the city in two. There are several bridges which cross its wide span, but the main means of crossing is small private boat "taxis" and the public water buses.

  • Favorite Thing: Here on the Grand Canal you can clearly see on the left side of the pic, one of the many "floating" bus stations. It is the small oblong with the two yellow stipes, floating just past the gondola.

  • Favorite Thing: Here in the forground you can see one of the many taxi stands along the Grand Canal. You just step off of dry land and put yourself in the hands of the skipper. That little brown boat in the forfront of the picture had a small sign in English "Taxi"..

  • Fondest Memory: This is the northeast and northwest section from the Bridge of Tears, a more residential area with more "open" streets and more parking area...

  • Favorite Thing: The accumulated affects of age, neglect and sea air. This building in Venice is not for long and it will soon have to be replaced or need major repair before it falls over, but it does have a beauty of its own.

  • Favorite Thing: This is the tower in the San Marcos Square. You can take an elevator to the top for a small fee and the view from there is fantastic, you can see all of Venice at your feet.

  • by Martin_S.

  • Favorite Thing: When you climb the tower in San Marcos Square you will encounter this bell in the tower. It hangs there in this open space where people go to see the "larger" view of Venice, it seems to be waiting for some eager novice to come up and ring it so its peal will be heard over all the city, but for the moment it waits in vain, the tourists look out toward the city, not into the bell tower itself.

  • Favorite Thing: The Basillica di San Marcos, stands in San Marcos Square, and along with the tower there form two sides of the square. The ornate entrance is so over decorated it is almost gaudy. From the horses above to the painting on the ceiling, there are just too many details for you to take in. You need to let your eyes take a break and then look again to see the next thing.

  • Favorite Thing: At the Basillica di San Marcos, is done in style. You can see fluted columns, friezes, statues of people and griffins, a pope, cherubs and a whole passle of other things, just get up close and personal to see it all.

Oh almost forgot to mention, the entrance to Basillica di San Marcos is restricted by dress code, if you have shorts, sandals or short sleeved dress, you will not be allowed entrance...so come prepared.

YES! Always take your children along during your travels. I do agree! Only for the education of other cultures and languages is one reason to do so. The smile on their faces is another. A site well done!
