Megiddo, or Tel Megiddo (Tel means mound and most of the ancient building sites were built on mounds to be above the surrounding area) is located about 12 kilometers west of Afula.
This map at the entrance shows you what you will find on the Tel.
The song said "stairway to heaven", well here at Megiddo because of the large amount of destruction of the site in ancient times you can see that this stirway literally leads to "nowhere". The stairway itself is well preserved, but whatever it led FROM and arrived AT are no longer there.
The water system here at Megiddo is one of the best in Israel, I think only that found in the old city of Jerusalem is better. Here you can see Hrvojka just exiting the area at the end of the tunnel where the water source can be found. But only if you are willing to descend lots and lots of stairs.
- Pros:Amazing piece of history
- Cons:go in summer, spring/fall are too crowded
