This mosaic can be found in the roman villa that sits on a commanding spot on top of the highest point in Zippori, it is also used as the symbol of this ancient town.
You can find out about entrance fees and times at 04-6568272. Or at the National Park Service site: http://www.parks.org.il/ParksENG/company_card.php3?NewNameMade=44&from=116&CNumber=509884
In the brochure that you receive at the entrance they say the following: Zippori is mentioned for the first time by the Hasmoneam King Alexander Yannai (103BC). During Herod's reign, Zippori was capital of Galilee. During the 3rd century the Jewish Sanhedrin (the high judical and ecclesiastical council) moved to Zippori. In the middle of the 4th century most of Zippori was destroyed by an earthquake, but was rebuilt. Zippori continued to be developd during the Byzantine period but under later Islamic period declined.
Here in the "Nile Building", this particular mosaic is what gives the building its name. It depicts scenes from the Nile Valley in Egypt. Some celebrate the Egyptian festival surrounding the flooding of the Nile when it gives its live giving waters and mud to the surrounding flood plains for another growing year.
Also in the Nile Building is this geometric mosaic, you can see in the various mosaics, stones of differing sizes, from stones of about 20m"m on a side to tiny ones of only 5m"m...
- Pros:Unbelievable mosaics
- Cons:Not enough preservation work done.
- In a nutshell:Take lots of film and time to enjoy Zippori
