"The Caroni Swamp" Caroni by Martin_S.

Caroni Travel Guide: 2 reviews and 5 photos

This is one of the byways of the Caroni Swamp in northwestern Trinidad. A large chunk of Trinidad is covered by this maze of trees and waterways. It is also home to the beautiful Scarlet Ibis which homes here in the thousands. While the guide explains some of the wildlife you will see in the swamp you might just find a large snake on a tree limb near your head, or a frog jump off as you pass.

The Scarlet Ibis use the Caroni Swamp as one of its breeding grounds. Sorry for the little picture, but the guides did not tell us that we "park" the boat so far away. If you want a good pic of the Ibis, take a telephoto lens of at least 400 or more.

As the boat guide starts to take you back at the end of the day, you travel through the green wonderland of the swamp and if you are lucky you will also see a sunset like this one. There is a particularly large open space where they stop to let you see the sunset.
