Staunton (pronounced "Stanton") is the largest town in the Shenandoah Valley. This town has the finest examples of early American architecture in this part of Virginia. It's also the birthplace of President Woodrow Wilson, whose Presidential Library is located here. Finally, the town has a museum of frontier life--a great educational experience. So it's well worth a visit.

Conveniently located at the juncture of I-64 and I-81, the town is perfectly situated for those travelling through Virginia. No need to spend the night here, but there's easily enough to see for several hours.

On the downside, this is definitely the Bible Belt. Nearly all businesses, including the most restaurants, are closed on Sundays. And if you spend the night here, don't look for any nightlife. The streets are nearly deserted by 9:00 pm, even on Saturday. Pay heed to the warning about police watching the bars--whether you're driving or not.
