The blues were born in the Mississippi Delta. From there, they made their way up the river to Memphis, where they met up with country music as it headed west from Nashville. There, they produced a hybrid that became known as "rock and roll", or simply "Rock". This is one of the most important cultural events of the 20th century.

Memphis also takes great pride in its river heritage. It has Mud Island, a set of exhibits dedicated to the river.

Named after a city in ancient Egypt, this city is also known for its own pyramid--a concert hall on the river (toward the left in the photo shown here). While passing through the South, don't miss this historic river city.
