The City of Three Rivers

Pittsburgh

Pittsburgh's skyline
The Monongahela and Allegheny Rivers merge here, forming the Ohio River. At this strategic juncture, the 18th century colonial British government established a fort to maintain control of the area. Named Ft Pitt, after the British Prime Minister, it became a bone of contention between Britain and France.

Following the French and Indian War (known in Europe as the Seven Years' War), Britain enjoyed uncontested control of the area. The settlement grew, becoming incorporated as a city in 1816.

In the 19th century, it became a major industrial center, America's foremost steel city. But in recent years, the steel industry has declined. So the city is morphing into a financial center, and remains a busy river port.

What is there to see here? Plenty. Pittsburgh is NOT a huge tourist draw, even during the summer. But if you visit, you'll find at least enough activity for a long holiday weekend. And there's more, if you include day trips into the nearby countryside.

Attention Sports Fans!

This city has a major-league baseball and football franchise. That's enough for many people.
The Carnegie Library

Pittsburgh's Art and Culture

However, if you appreciate the arts and want a diverse cultural scene, then the city has a lot to offer. With an outstanding library, a collection of museums, a lively theater district, and festivals, Pittsburgh is impressive for its size. It has more going on than many larger cities.

In A Nutshell:"No longer just a grimy steel city"
