Nightlife Spot: Columbus Maennerchor
In 1846, a group of 12 German immigrants decided to keep their culture alive in America by creating a men's chorus, or "Maennerchor". SInce then, a women's chorus and children's chorus have been formed, too. This has been a prominent social gathering place ever since.
Visiting Columbus on a Monday, I never expected to find much going on in the way of live entertainment. But there was a sign in front of this place advertising a live jazz orchestra, so I had to check it out.
It was Vaughn Wiester's 21-piece "Famous Jazz Orchestra". They could really swing! And they perform most Mondays at 7:30. It's worth going out of your way to see this, especially if you like the big bands. They play an assortment of compositions, not just the ones that all the other bands play. And some of the soloists are terrific. Check the website for more information on this and the other shows.
