"Herkimer: Between I-90 and the Erie Canal" Herkimer by Tom_Fields

Old and New

Herkimer stands between America's first superhighway--the Erie Canal--and a new superhighway, the 1-90 toll road. The canal was the brainchild of New York Governor Clinton. At first, it was derided as "Clinton's Ditch". But soon after it opened, it became the interstate highway of its day. Clogged with long, narrow boats, it soon became a victim of its own success.

The newer canal was built about 1900. This is the one here at Herkimer. Parts of the orignal canal can still be seen elsewhere around upstate New York (and yes, it IS a ditch). Operating from Herkimer, the Lil' Diamond II takes visitors for a cruise on this fabled waterway. Just off I-90, it's worth the visit.
