This city, founded in 1623 at the mouth of the Piscataqua River, is opposite from Kittery, Maine. Portsmouth was officially incorporated in 1849. It has a long history of association with the US Navy. Although the old naval base is closed, the naval shipyard is still in business. The old naval prison still stands. In 1905, President Theodore Roosevelt negotiated the end of the Russo-Japanese War in this city. |
