Portsmouth: New Hampshire's Most Historic City

by Tom_Fields - last update: Feb 25, 2006

Portsmouth

Portsmouth's waterfront
This city, founded in 1623 at the mouth of the Piscataqua River, is opposite from Kittery, Maine. Portsmouth was officially incorporated in 1849. It has a long history of association with the US Navy. Although the old naval base is closed, the naval shipyard is still in business. The old naval prison still stands. In 1905, President Theodore Roosevelt negotiated the end of the Russo-Japanese War in this city.

I saw a wonderful adaptation of Oliver when I was in Portsmouth back in July. I forgot about the submarine, thanks for the reminder.

Thanks for the page and info on Portsmouth. The Albacore looks especially interesting. Another thing to add to our list of things to visit!
