This medieval town has one of the best castles in Europe--and I've toured quite a few. The moat was unusually wide, providing a barrier which most siege engines couldn't overcome.
Caerphilly attracts many tourists from around Wales and England, but I didn't see too many others. It's a bit out of the way for most visitors, but regular train service to and from Cardiff is available. |
| Weapons used in medieval sieges |
| | Medieval Siege Engines The weapons used to besiege medieval castles were crude by our standards, but quite effective at the time. The trebuchet, ballista, and others struck fear into the hearts of those within the walls. These and others have been re-constructed, and are on display here at Caerphilly Castle. |

| | Military Displays During my visit, Caerphilly had a festival with historic military formations, booths, live music, and lots of fun. Shown here are re-enactors in English Civil War costumes. |
