The Roman Empire occupied the westernmost parts of modern-day Germany. However, when the Romans ventured east of the Rhine, they suffered a devastating defeat at the Battle of the Teutoberg Forest. Consequently, their vast empire extended only up to the Rhine.
Trier stood on the frontier of their empire in northern Europe. Today, it has the most Roman ruins of any city in Germany. It also has a fine cathedral and historic city center. Trier is also in the very heart of Germany's famed wine country, along the Moselle River.
