A Tragic History | Cracow's medieval market square |
The Second World War began in Poland on September 1, 1939. In that terrible war, Poland suffered greater loss of life, relative to its population, than any other country. Afterward, it was a vassal state of the despotic Soviet Union for over 40 years.
But today, Poland is enjoying an unprecedented renaissance. It's a free country, with an economy transitioning from socialism to a more mixed system. Living standards have moved up. Despite the current recession, Poland will prosper in the future.
People here look up to America, the country that stood down the evil empire. It's also the most Catholic country in the world. Everywhere you look, there's a church. There's a lot to see here, and it's not as overrun by tourists as other parts of Europe. |
