An important road junction in Roman times, this town has been settled since at least the time of the ancient Etruscans. It still retains the basic layout that the Romans created about the 3rd century BC.
The Ligurians built a wall around their town in the 16th century that still stands, along with a beautiful Romanesque cathedral. It was a prosperous trading center for centuries. Today, Lucca is one of Tuscany's most ancient and best-preserved towns.
