Sorrento - Sorrento

Jewel of the Bay of Naples

On the southern shore of the Bay of Naples, across from Naples and Mt Vesuvius, lies Sorrento. This town has long been a popular destination for tourists from northern Europe, especially the British.

Its origins are so ancient that little is known of them. The name came from the Greek legend of the Sirens (remember them from Homer's Odyssey?), whose enticing songs would lure sailors to their deaths on the treacherous rocks along the shore. It probably began as a Greek colony, sometime not longer after Homer.

The town's layout shows a Roman influence, too. An ancient Roman villa stands over the cliffs outside the town. Later invaders included the Normans and the Ottoman Turks. Now most visitors are tourists, who are the mainstay of the local economy.

In addition to tourism, the town relies on agriculture; its warm, sunny Mediterranean climate is ideal for the cultivation of citrus fruits like oranges and lemons. The famed Italian lemon liqueur comes from this area.
